Loma Prieta
Named after the 1989 earthquake that devastated Northern California, Bay Area band Loma Prieta craft a hardcore sound that straddles the line between melodic and uncomfortable as it merges styles like screamo and powerviolence into a potent blend. While grinding on the D.I.Y. circuit, playing self-booked gigs and crashing at fans' homes, they released their full-length debut, Last City, in 2008. After two more independent releases, they signed with Deathwish Inc. for their critically acclaimed fourth set, 2011's I.V., which pushed their sound into even heavier territory. Following 2015's Self Portrait, the band only released a pair of tracks in the lengthy gap before their sixth effort, 2023's Last.
Formed in 2005, the band's lineup features Valeriano Saucedo III (drums), Sean Leary (guitar and vocals), Brian Kanagaki (guitar and vocals), and James Siboni (bass). After releasing a pair of EPs -- Our LP Is Your EP (2006) and Matrimony (2007) -- the band released its debut album, Last City, on its own label, Discos Huelga, in May 2008. The harsh brutality and sonic dissonance of Loma Prieta's discordant sound was carried forward on both independently released follow-ups, Dark Mountain and Life/Less. In 2011, the group signed with distributor Deathwish Inc. for their fourth release, the aptly titled I.V., which was produced by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Punch). A year later, they issued a split EP with Italian screamo band Raein, which was followed in late 2015 with their fifth album, Self Portrait. Alongside a returning Shirley, the LP was inspired by fellow Californian hardcore outfits like Funeral Diner and Mohinder.
Eight years would pass before their next album, with only a single -- "Continuum" b/w "Fate" -- sating fans in 2019. Another Shirley-helmed set, Last, arrived in 2023 and collected years of global tension that was delivered with the band's trademark beauty and intensity.
