Gaétan Jarry
Conductor and organist Gaétan Jarry specializes in the music of the French Baroque. He is the founder of the Ensemble Marguerite Louise.
Jarry was born in 1986. He attended the conservatories of Versailles and Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, studying at the latter with Frédéric Desenclos and Eric Lebrun. He went on to the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSM), where he earned a bachelor's degree in organ in 2010; his teachers were Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard. Jarry served from 2010 to 2017 as director of the choir school of the Petits Chanteurs de Saint François de Versailles, and he has also guest directed several other youth choirs. Jarry founded the choral-orchestral Ensemble Marguerite Louise, named for Marguerite-Louise Couperin, cousin of composer and harpsichordist François Couperin and one of the celebrated sopranos of the French court. With that group, Jarry released his debut album, Motets pour une Princesse, on the L'Encelade label in 2015; the album focused on hitherto unknown works of Marc-Antoine Charpentier. In 2016, Jarry became co-titular organist of Saint-Gervais in Paris, the possessor of several historic organs.
That year, Jarry and Ensemble Marguerite Louise began a residency at the Palace of Versailles, continuing to hold that position as of the early 2020s. The group has also performed at other venues around France, including the Royal Opera of Versailles, the Théâtre d'Avignon, and Les Grands Concerts de Lyon. It has been in demand at festivals in France and beyond, including the Radio France Occitanie Festival, Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay, and the Musikfestspiele Potsdam in Germany. Jarry has led the Ensemble Marguerite Louise in more than a dozen recordings, all but two (2022's Handel's Chandos Anthems and 2023's coronation anthems of Handel and Purcell) devoted to French Baroque music. All have appeared on the Château de Versailles label. In 2023, Jarry and the Ensemble Marguerite Louise released a recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's little-known opera David & Jonathas.
