Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester
The Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra (in German, Frankfurt Opern und Museumorchester or Städtisches Opern und Museumorchester Frankfurt) is one of Germany's oldest and most renowned symphonic ensembles. Its beginnings date back as far as the late 18th century, when Frankfurt's municipal opera house came into being. In 1808 a local music society began to organize concerts by the orchestra at the Frankfurt Museum, which soon gave the group its rather unusual name.
Its music director at the time was Louis Spohr, and the line of conductors since then has been equally illustrious, including Clemens Krauss, William Steinberg, Paul Hindemith, Georg Solti (1952-1961), and Christoph von Dohnányi. Guest conductors have included Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss (with whom the orchestra premiered both Ein Heldenleben and Also Sprach Zarathustra), Bruno Walter, and Wilhelm Furtwängler; among the soloists who have performed with the orchestra are Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann.
Since the turn of the millennium the orchestra has often been the recipient of Opera Orchestra of the Year and Orchestra of the Year nods from Germany's Opernwelt magazine. The orchestra plays a ten-concert subscription season in Frankfurt at the city's Alte Oper (now a concert hall). Its music director as of 2018 was Sebastian Weigle. As of 2017 the orchestra also operates the Paul Hindemith Orkesterakademie, an institute for the training of young orchestral musicians.
The orchestra is perhaps less well known than some of its German peers because it has recorded sparsely compared with, for example, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2010s, however, the group began an association with the boutique German label Oehms, recording mostly opera by Wagner (its first recording on Oehms was of Die Walküre) and Richard Strauss. It issued a reading of Strauss' Alpensinfonie on Oehms in 2016 and delved into the Baroque with Antonio Cesti's L'Orontea the following year.
