U2 ayant à bien des égards atteint un pic dans la grandiloquence avec War, il n'est guère surprenant de voir le groupe explorer les entrelacs sonores gorgés d'effets de la guitare de The Edge sur son successeur, The Unforgettable Fire. Avec Brian Eno et Daniel Lanois, U2 y concocte une série de tableaux sombres, limite hallucinés, ponctués de chansons plus traditionnelles pour un résultat très contrasté. Si "Elvis Presley and America" est l'un des textes les plus embarrassants de Bono, il est largement compensé par la sublime "Bad", élégie à un junkie évoluant avec maîtrise sur deux notes. Quant au miroitant morceau titre, la volontaire "A Sort Of Homecoming" ou "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", hommage à Martin Luther King, elles font partie des perles du répertoire du groupe, faisant oublier les quelques défauts du disque.
