2023 is the year of the supergroup, and here we are presented with the wacky British cousin of boygenius … FIZZ! The thrilling partnership of Orla Gartland, dodie, Greta Isaac, and Martin Luke Brown stands as a musical revelation. Their debut magnum opus, The Secret to Life blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy. It's an extravagant, hallucinatory odyssey, with rock-opera-like interludes, magnificent a cappella harmonies, and slower, more contemplative tunes which align with the established—if not the predictable—style of the members: dodie's melodious compositions; Gartland's indie riffs; Isaac's alternative-pop inclinations. This cooperative effort affords the individuals a moment to liberate themselves from personal trademarks and anticipations, injecting FIZZ's music with a fresh breath of creativity. A holiday from their pre-existing careers if you will.
Traces of Queen's grandeur resonate throughout the record, yet it's a wholly contemporary and exclusive creation that might even win over some Queen purists. Above all, The Secret to Life is exceptionally entertaining. (The band's music videos adeptly capture the album's jubilant absurdity.) FIZZ channels the contagious vigour of endearing British merrymaking and transforms it into a multitude of tracks offering boundless delight. Songs like "High In Brighton" and "Hell of a Ride" are undeniably infectious. You can tell how much fun the group had creating this album, and as a listener, we feel included in that. The meticulous instrumentation and attention to detail are obvious. Every instrument, harmony, and voice contributes to the overall sound with great consideration.
