L’air de rien, Kurt Elling ne serait-il pas le meilleur chanteur de jazz de sa génération ? L’idée d’une quelconque compétition, d’un quelconque classement, est évidemment grotesque, pour ne pas dire stupide, mais force est de constater qu’album après album, le chanteur de Chicago poursuit un périple proche du sans-faute. En 2015, avec Passion World, Elling revisitait Nicht Wandle, Mein Licht extrait des Liebeslieder de Brahms mais aussi des pièces signées U2, Pat Metheny, Björk sans oublier La Vie en rose et même un poème de James Joyce ! Pour ce onzième album éclectique au possible, il délaissait les acrobaties dont il avait le secret pour un style plus langoureux et sensuel, un chant qu’il livrait avec beaucoup de raffinement.
L’éventail de son registre comme l’impressionnante justesse de son énonciation sont à nouveau au menu d’un festin de reprises tout aussi parfait. Avec The Questions, Kurt Elling s’attaque cette fois à Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Jaco Pastorius, Leonard Bernstein, Carla Bley, Johnny Mercer et quelques autres. Produit par le saxophoniste Branford Marsalis, ce douzième opus réunit le pianiste Joey Calderazzo, le batteur Jeff “Tain” Watts, le guitariste John McLean, l’organiste Stu Mindeman, le trompettiste Marquis Hill et le bassiste Clark Sommers. Une belle brochette de virtuoses au service d’un chanteur qui réussit à imposer son style et la rondeur de sa voix, même sur des standards repris par la Terre entière comme Skylark.
