L’anecdote est connue : la raison première de l’enregistrement de ce disque est motivée par l’insistance du fisc à récupérer quelques arriérés d’impôts. Cependant, Willie Nelson, en vieux grigou au nez creux qu’il est, n’a pas pour autant pondu un disque négligé torché en quelques heures sur un coin de table.
nAu contraire, l’album est particulièrement bien ciselé et l’auteur connaît manifestement son sujet tout en le maîtrisant au mieux. Vieux routard de la country, Willie Nelson pouvait difficilement aboutir à un résultat médiocre, quoi qu’il en soit. Pour une fois qu’une expérience artistique donne envie de payer ses impôts, il faudrait être fou pour s’en priver.
