Enregistré lors de trois séances (21 janvier et 22 avril 1949 et 9 mars 1950), Birth of the Cool rompt avec le sacro-saint be-bop pour faire entrer le jazz dans une ère nouvelle. Sous la direction d’un Miles Davis âgé seulement de 23 ans, la folie virtuose et l’urgence du bop laissent ici leur place à un jazz logiquement nommé cool, plus lent, plus écrit, plus harmonieux, plus éthéré, presque chambriste… Un style qui n’emballera alors pas toute la jazzosphère, certains reprochant une soi-disant froideur à cette musique qui va parfois chercher sa source dans la musique classique. Enregistré lors de sessions espacées, Birth of the Cool offre alors un casting impressionnant : Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan, Junior Collins, Sandy Siegelstein, Bill Barber, J. J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Mike Zwerin, Al Haig, John Lewis, Joe Shulman, Nelson Boyd, Al McKibbon, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke et Gil Evans participent à ce tremblement de terre de velours. N’optant ni pour le big band, ni pour la petite formation, Miles dirige ici un nonette, qui lui permet de mettre l’accent sur les arrangements que lui ont concoctés Gerry Mulligan, Gil Evans et John Lewis. Et la modernité comme la rigueur de la musique jouée comptent sans doute parmi les plus grandes révolutions de toute l’histoire du jazz.
