Avec ce génial deuxième album, la bande de Robert Smith trouve le son qui la définira dans cette décennie de new wave régnante. Atmosphérique à souhait, Seventeen Seconds renferme ainsi toute l’essence de l’art de Cure : la basse est majestueuse et fantomatique, les arpèges de guitares offrent le brillant du cristal, les nappes de synthés ouatés tendent un ample paysage de froideur inédit et le chant torturée mais ample du grand Robert apporte la touche finale à cet univers mélancolique et anthracite mais toujours hypnotique. De l’ouverture onirique d’A Reflection au groove martial de l’hymne A Forest, en passant par le nerveux Play For Today, ces Seventeen Seconds indissociables des deux albums suivants de Cure – Faith en 1981 et Pornography en 1982 – enfantent un monde fascinant, moins crépusculaire qu’il n’y parait, et dont l’influence se fait encore sentir encore aujourd’hui.
