Alors inconnue du grand public qui ne s'est guère soucié de ses aventures avec Rip Rig + Panic, Neneh Cherry fait autant l'effet d'un OVNI que d'une bombe lorsqu'elle débarque avec fracas dans le paysage musical en 1988. C'est le succès du titre « Buffalo Stance » qui déclenche les hostilités. Basé sur un sample de « Buffalo Gals » de Malcolm Mc Laren de 1983, « Buffalo Stance » se classe numéro trois au Billboard et numéro un des charts dance américain.
Ce succès initial et la plastique de Neneh Cherry photographiée par Jean-Baptiste Mondino sur la pochette de l'album, peuvent faire croire que Neneh Cherry est une Rihanna de son époque. Ce serait nier l'aspect totalement avant-gardiste de l'album concocté par Neneh Cherry, son mari Cameron McVey, ainsi que 3-D et Mushroom de Massive Attack alors inconnus.
Le mélange de rap, de rock, et d'electro qui en résulte est alors totalement inconnu, le charisme de Neneh Cherry se chargeant de convaincre les indécis. La jeune femme harangue sur un « Manchild » qui annonce le trip hop, la rage de Neneh Cherry en plus. Sans trop pousser le bouchon, on peut aussi considérer « Inna City Mama » comme précurseur de la néo-soul. « Heart » et ses breakbeats infernaux permet à Neneh Cherry de rapper comme si sa vie en dépendait. Il faut d'ailleurs rendre grâce à l'artiste de vivre ses chansons comme bien peu peuvent le faire.
Album inclassable à sa sortie, précurseur du son qui allait envahir la planète dans les années suivantes, encore vierge de trop de bidouillages et de facilités électroniques, Raw Like Sushi est bien un chef d'oeuvre. Il est d'ailleurs reconnu à sa juste valeur tant commercialement qu'artistiquement avec un Brit Award et une nomination aux Grammy Awards. Finalement la seule différence entre Neneh Cherry et Rihanna, c'est que la seconde n'aurait pas existé sans la première.
