La chanteuse Martina Topley-Bird avait marqué les esprits en s'illustrant sur le premier album de son compagnon Tricky, Maxinquaye (1995). Si le couple s'est séparé depuis, il est resté artistiquement lié, puisque Tricky fait partie de l'équipe de producteurs ayant travaillé sur ce premier album solo de la chanteuse, Quixotic (2003), et cosignant le titre « Ragga ».
S'adjoignant également les services de Nick Bird, Steve Crittall, Alex McGowan et David Holmes, Martina Topley-Bird livre seize titres éclectiques. Introduit par des chœurs a capella, l'album passe du rock, saturé de guitares électriques (« Need One », « I Want Be There », « Too Tough to Die »), au blues (« Lullaby »), et du trip-hop (« Soul Food », « Stevie's (Day of Gun) »), à de superbes mélodies lentes et hypnotiques (« Anything », « Lying », « Llya »). Eraillée, chevrotante, la voix de Martina Topley-Bird s'y révèle pourtant captivante, tant elle semble extatique.
