Many contemporary composers ape superficial moves of Renaissance polyphony as a way of claiming the mantle of tradition, but the Italian (or one might say Vatican) Claudio Dall'Albero is after something deeper. In this collection of Latin sacred pieces, including a mass and some organ works, he writes a good deal of music that could have come out of the 16th century, except that it doesn't quite fit the style of any composer of that era. Dall'Albero confidently sets of important text with block chords, moving into contrasting polyphonic sections that introduce a hint of dissonance. But here's the thing: he extends the style into contemporary harmony in these sections, and these sections only. In so doing, he achieves a real fusion of Renaissance and contemporary choral idioms. The three organ pieces, one of them humorously titled "Jogging nel Parco Jesus Green" (the music was written for English performers and makes reference to Cambridge University in various ways), play an important role here: the harmonic idiom of these pieces is more dissonant than any of the choral music, and it forms a sort of centerpiece. Sample the "Gloria" of the mass for an idea of Dall'Albero's unique style. It may be that the album will attract other choirs to Dall'Albero; the work of the Choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, is entirely idiomatic, and Resonus' sound is superb. A fascinating bridge between the Renaissance and the present day.
