La musique étant la plus puissante machine à voyager dans le temps, Chick Corea s’embarque ici dans un trip à 360° pour faire converser ensemble Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Stevie Wonder, Thelonious Monk, George Gershwin, Domenico Scarlatti, Bill Evans, Antonio Carlos Jobim et quelques autres. Et comme lui-même est un immense musicien, parfois un brin sous-estimé, il se permet de s’immiscer dans cette réunion de génies. Face à ses publics (Plays présente des extraits de concerts de 2018 à Paris, Berlin et Clearwater), Corea est seul au piano. Dans ce contexte, son art prend une dimension supérieure. La richesse de son langage, déjà très original dès son premier disque de 1968 pour Blue Note (Now He Sings, Now He Sobs), dépasse l’entendement tout au long des presque deux heures de musique de ce double album. La fluidité de son jeu comme le timbre coloré de ses improvisations s’adaptent à tous les thèmes, qu’ils datent du XXe ou du XVIIIe siècle. Et chaque seconde recèle une intense joie de jouer. La sensation est même flagrante sur les huit titres qui referment ce live. Des miniatures extraites de Children’s Songs que Chick Corea enregistra pour le label ECM en 1984. Des pièces écrites dans l’esprit de liberté et de créativité inhérent à l’imagination d’un enfant et dont cette relecture, plus de trente-cinq ans après leur enregistrement, rappelle des valeurs qui n’ont pas quitté leur auteur à quelques mois de fêter ses 80 ans… Féerique. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
