Motown au nord. Et Stax au sud. Deux conceptions bien distinctes de la soul music. Dans la moiteur sudiste de Memphis, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. et quelques autres ont inventé un groove unique, biberonné au blues et surtout au gospel.

Ni Motown ! Ni Stax ! La soul de Philadelphie proposera une troisième voix bien à elle. Concocté par la paire Kenny Gamble et Leon Huff, ce genre précurseur du disco fait danser l’Amérique du début des années 70 en la plongeant dans la soie et le champagne.

Verve, le son de l’Amérique

En définissant son label comme étant « le son de l’Amérique », Norman Granz avait visé dans le mille. Certes, c’était au siècle dernier. Certes, ça ne concernait que le jazz. Mais aujourd’hui encore, avec un catalogue dans lequel se bousculent Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, Lester Young, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson et des dizaines d’autres, Verve reste l’une des plus belles aventures de l’histoire de la musique.
