C'est en grand triomphateur que Blur est venu cueillir les fruits bien mûrs de son succès, vieux d'une quinzaine d'années séparant le point culminant de la britpop de ce concert mondialisé pour cause de cérémonie de clôture des Jeux Olympiques, pendant que la fratrie Gallagher continuait de s'entredéchirer par déclarations interposées.
Devant un Hyde Park plein comme un oeuf ce soir d'août 2012, l'imperator Damon Albarn a conduit de main de maître le spectacle en alignant les tubes, « Girls & Boys » en tête, servi sous le coup de l'émotion. « We love Londoooon !! » crie l'humble boss qui enchaîne sur un « London Loves » légèrement brouillon avec vélléité funky au milieu des riffs implacables de Graham Coxon, véritable socle inventif de la bande. « Tracy Jacks », extrait de Parklife, « Beetlebum », « Coffee and TV », « Young and Lovely » et autre « Caramel » forment une suite inégale et brouillonne qui, si ce n'était l'enthousiasme de la foule qui ce soir-là porte l'événement à son comble, ferait de Blur un piètre groupe live.
Damon Albarn peut lever haut les couleurs de l'Union Jack et pleurer de joie quand s'achèvent les dernières notes de « The Universal ». Le public indubitablement conquis, totalement aux anges, se satisfait de ce qui manque le plus à l'auditeur de cette fête refroidie. Le deuxième CD, dans la foulée de « Country House » et d'un « Parklife » featuring Phil Daniels (comme sur disque), a beau prolonger un tracklisting de rêve en y ajoutant « Popscene », « Song 2 », « This Is A Low », l'inédit « Under The Westway » et « End of the Century », il n'en reste pas moins que l'émotion est restée dans l'herbe grasse foulée par les fans et badauds de l'événement, et que la reformation, préparée depuis trois ans selon un teasing et un timing parfaits, s'avère trop belle pour durer. Blur se conjugue au passé pour la tête chercheuse qu'est devenu Albarn, déjà en route vers un nouveau projet.
