Kaiser Chiefs, réunissant cinq garçons originaire de l’anglaise ville de Leeds, avaient déjà fait beaucoup parler d’eux avec leur premier album Employment (2006), qui s’était vendu comme des petits pains. Le petit goût de nouveauté s’était envolé pour un deuxième disque moins convaincant, mais ce Yours Truly, Angry Mob (2007) les confirmait néanmoins comme dignes suiveurs des Franz Ferdinand.
Pour Off With Their Heads, le groupe a visiblement voulu surprendre à nouveau, et ne surtout pas être où on les attendait. Leur rock est toujours porté par une immense ambition pop (« pour faire danser les filles », comme dirait Alex Kapranos, chanteur des Franz Ferdinand), mais lorgne bien plus du côté des envolées punk et new-wave de la fin des années 1970.
Ce nouveau virage est annoncé dès le premier morceau, une brillante démonstration de rock énergisant intitulée « Spanish Metal », vite suivie par des titres irrésistiblement entraînants, courts, simples et efficaces. Impossible de renier la production de Mark Ronson, le roi de la pop song parfaitement calibrée. Se répondent ainsi, dans une même orientation festive et ludique, des titres comme « Like it Too Much », « You Want History », « Tomato in the Rain » (où l’on se demande si les Kaiser Chiefs ont découvert le LSD ) et bien sûr, l’évident et foudroyant single « Never Miss a Beat ».
Présence de Mark Ronson oblige, la pimpante Lily Allen vient illustrer de sa voix sucrée les chœurs d’un « Always Happens Like That » qui réinterprète la brit pop de Blur. Lorsque l’album se termine après seulement quarante-cinq petites minutes, il paraît évident que les Kaiser Chiefs ont retrouvé une grande forme… qu’on pourrait aisément qualifier d’olympique.
