Les gros moyens sont de sortie pour le premier album de Melissa Nkonda, lauréate de l'audition Je Veux Signer chez AZ, lancée par Valery Zeitoun via le réseau social Facebook. Outre la caution du faiseur de tubes RedOne sur trois titres, le patron de AZ a obtenu les participations de Soprano sur le morceau titre, et celle de V.V. Brown sur « J'ai fait tout ça pour vous ».
Les deux titres phares ouvrent l'album pour ne laisser aucun doute sur son potentiel. Dans un registre neo-soul bien rythmé, Melissa Nkonda place sa voix avec justesse, en rajoutant juste un peu trop comme pour souligner sa qualité de débutante.
Entre Inna Modja et Ben l'Oncle Soul, Melissa Nkonda accroche bien vite le succès avec « Nouveaux horizons » qui séduit les radios et devient le premier tube de l'album. « Sors de sa vie » sent un peu trop la variété contemporaine, Melissa Nkonda en profitant pour étaler ses tics au grand jour, « Africa » frôle le ridicule avec un retour aux sources surjoué à tous points de vue, « Mes aventures » sent le vécu et possède une certaine fraîcheur.
« Viens » rehausse le niveau d'ensemble avec un soupçon d'originalité, mais pourquoi diable Melissa Nkonda vocalise t'elle autant ? « Je veux danser » est bien construit mais peut faire penser à du Christophe Maé. Nouveaux Horizons est au final plus un album de neo-variété française que de neo-soul, Melissa Nkonda s'employant à y gâcher une vraie énergie et une jolie voix par un manque de sobriété flagrant.
