Plutôt que le football australien ou le droit, James Gabriel Wanderson Keogh a choisi la musique, sous le pseudonyme de Vance Joy pour ne pas interférer avec sa vie privée. Et de vie privée il est question dans Nation of Two dont le titre se réfère, selon son auteur, à la cellule que forme un couple qui partage maison, voiture et souvenirs.
Pour son deuxième album, Vance Joy a fait évoluer son folk pop vers une instrumentation plus fournie, à l'image de l'archétype de morceaux comme « Riptide » ou « Great Summer » qui ont fait son succès : la chanson commence doucement au son d'arpèges de guitare acoustique pour enfler progressivement vers l'apothéose mélodique. Un format qu'il reproduit sur les extraits « Lay It On Me » et « We're Going Home ». À l'inverse, « Call If You Need Me » reste sur la même ligne, seulement rehaussé de choeurs.
Ce sont les principaux titres d'un album où la voix chaleureuse du compositeur, guitariste et chanteur est l'un des atouts. Elle sait emmener l'auditeur vers ses histoires chargées d'émotions. Aigüe sur « Saturday Sun », propre à être reprise par la foule en tournée, elle se fait plus intimiste sur « Take Your Time » et « I'm With You », au tempérament plus folk que pop rock. Les treize pistes à la production sobre oscillent ainsi entre les deux styles de Vance Joy, dont cette suite à Dream Your Life Away (2014), devrait conforter la renommée internationale.
