Le R&B moderne est du pur divertissement, une musique pour illustrer des clips où se déhanchent des belles à forte poitrine. De belles voix capables de roucouler sur de sempiternelles histoires de jalousie, de tromperies et autres amours impossibles.
Moodring est de ce point de vue un bon album de R&B, très bien produit, alternant parfaitement titres chauds et ballades collantes. Mya, ex danseuse et chorégraphe, prouve qu'elle a une voix sans grand relief, parfaitement interchangeable avec une autre de ces consoeurs princesses du R&B.
« My Love Is Like...Wo » sort des usines de Missy Elliott et ne présente que peu de différence avec les autres productions de Miss E. « Fallen » est particulièrement insipide, tandis que « Sophisticated Lady » lorgne outrageusement vers du Kool and the Gang. C'est « Hurry Up » qui décroche sans mal la palme du titre le plus original de l'album, avec son petit gimmick à l'accordéon qui vient enrichir le son d'un Moodring vraiment trop formaté.
