En 1990, le remix – élément de base de l’ADN de la dance music – est une technique utilisée avec parcimonie par les groupes de rock. Soucieux pourtant d’être dans l’air du temps, les Cure décident de retravailler certaines de leurs anciennes chansons piochées dans leurs huit albums studio publiés entre 1979 et 1989. Leurs fans sont alors un brin déroutés par le résultat intitulé Mixed Up, publié en novembre 1990 et qui traverse pourtant bien l’épreuve des années. Réédité dans les habits de lumière d’une Deluxe Edition de trois CD en juin 2018, Mixed Up est agrémenté de remix rares de la période 1981/1990 (CD2) et de nouveaux remix de Robert Smith (CD3). Sur l’album de base remastérisé par le leader des Cure en personne, les relectures assez plates (Lullaby trop proche de l’original) côtoient les plus osées et excitantes (Close to Me) et même les titres inédits comme Never Enough qui faisait alors superbement tache avec son déluge guitaristique… Le troisième CD de cette Deluxe Edition est le vrai plus de cette réédition 5 étoiles. Fraîchement réalisés par Robert Smith, ses 16 remix ne sentent logiquement pas les 90’s. On l’imagine s’amusant comme un (savant) fou à triturer ses vieilles chansons dans tous les sens pour parfois les chambouler totalement. Sombre au possible dans sa version d’origine, A Strange Day de Pornography devient ainsi presque guilleret – presque. Plus loin, sur Lost de l’album The Cure, il dérape joliment en mode drum’n’bass. Bref, on sent le cerveau des Cure encore en pleine ébullition à l’approche de la soixantaine… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Chronique

En 1990, le remix – élément de base de l’ADN de la dance music – est une technique utilisée avec parcimonie par les groupes de rock. Soucieux pourtant d’être dans l’air du temps, les Cure décident de retravailler certaines de leurs anciennes chansons piochées dans leurs huit albums studio publiés entre 1979 et 1989. Leurs fans sont alors un brin déroutés par le résultat intitulé Mixed Up, publié en novembre 1990 et qui traverse pourtant bien l’épreuve des années. Réédité dans les habits de lumière d’une Deluxe Edition de trois CD en juin 2018, Mixed Up est agrémenté de remix rares de la période 1981/1990 (CD2) et de nouveaux remix de Robert Smith (CD3). Sur l’album de base remastérisé par le leader des Cure en personne, les relectures assez plates (Lullaby trop proche de l’original) côtoient les plus osées et excitantes (Close to Me) et même les titres inédits comme Never Enough qui faisait alors superbement tache avec son déluge guitaristique… Le troisième CD de cette Deluxe Edition est le vrai plus de cette réédition 5 étoiles. Fraîchement réalisés par Robert Smith, ses 16 remix ne sentent logiquement pas les 90’s. On l’imagine s’amusant comme un (savant) fou à triturer ses vieilles chansons dans tous les sens pour parfois les chambouler totalement. Sombre au possible dans sa version d’origine, A Strange Day de Pornography devient ainsi presque guilleret – presque. Plus loin, sur Lost de l’album The Cure, il dérape joliment en mode drum’n’bass. Bref, on sent le cerveau des Cure encore en pleine ébullition à l’approche de la soixantaine… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
