Retour à la case départ pour Denise Eileen Garrett alias Dee Dee Bridgewater : Memphis ! Là même où elle vit le jour le 27 mai 1950. La plus française des chanteuses américaines signe ici un hommage à l’une des villes les plus musicales des Etats-Unis. Une ville qu’elle a pourtant quitté à seulement trois ans pour se retrouver avec ses parents dans l’industrielle citée de Flint dans le Michigan. Mais son parcours prouvera que ces seules trois années auront suffi à marquer l’avenir. Enregistré aux célèbres Royal Studios de Memphis et produit par Kirk Whalum et Lawrence Mitchell, le petit-fils de Willie Mitchell d’Hi Records, le disque réunit des pépites locales de soul et de blues triées sur le volet. Des classiques chantés notamment par Otis Redding (Try A Little Tenderness), B.B. King (The Thrill Is Gone), les Soul Children ( The Sweeter He Is écrit par Isaac Hayes et Dave Porter), Elvis Presley (Don’t Be Cruel et Hound Dog), Carla Thomas ( B-A-B-Y également du tandem Hayes/Porter) ou bien encore Al Green (lI Can't Get Next To You écrit par Barrett Strong) et auxquels Dee Dee Bridgewater donne de jouissifs coups de fouet dont elle a le secret. Après la Nouvelle Orléans célébrée sur Dee Dee’s Feathers, voilà un nouvel hommage tout aussi classieux, certes plus groovy et dansant, mais qui montre que tout ce que sa voix touche se transforme en général en or. © CM/Qobuz
