After releasing their debut album Love and Regret, Cold Showers took some time to refine their music. While Love & Regret teetered between shoegaze, post-punk and indie pop in a charming, sometimes off-kilter fashion, the depth and control the band brings to Matter of Choice proves that it was worth the wait. Cold Showers' second album ties up some of the band's musical loose ends while putting the focus on Brian Davila's synths, particularly on standouts such as "Plantlife," which suggests what M83 might have sounded like had they been recording during Factory Records' heyday. Meanwhile, "She Hangs On" finds singer/bassist Jonathan Weinberg sounding more assured than ever as he gives despair a seductive edge as he croons "don't fear the ledge." This darker undercurrent runs through all of Matter of Choice -- and comes to the fore on "Undone" -- but Cold Showers still sound most compelling when they honor the flair for melodies and hooks they displayed on Love and Regret. As they channel some of their debut's bounce into "Crowds"' insinuating choruses and add a dash of New Romantic glamour to "Ceasefire," there's an ease to Matter of Choice that sets Cold Showers apart from their contemporaries.
