« Shit Kickin’ », premier single extrait de Look Long, laissait augurer en début d’année d’un retour brillant pour Indigo Girls, avant que l’album ne soit repoussé d’un mois et joue avec les nerfs des fans du duo folk-rock américain. Et pourtant, l’attente n’aura pas été vaine.
Car Look Long, quinzième chapitre de la discographie des Indigo Girls qui intervient cinq ans presque jour pour jour après la parution de One Lost Day, vient compenser dignement la frustration engendrée par l’album live sorti en 2018 par le duo pour faire patienter ses fans. Amy Ray et Emily Saliers n’ont pas été très « bavardes » sur ce nouvel opus qui ne compte que onze titres, mais elles ont su proposer la quintessence de leur créativité. Tout n’est qu’instinct dans cette collection de onze chansons enregistrée dans les studios de Real World, propriété de Peter Gabriel, là même où elles avaient déjà donné vie à l’un de leurs meilleurs opus, Come On Now Social, en 1999. Cette fois-ci pourtant, pas de Garth Brooks ou Sheryl Crow comme invité, mais un retour tout aussi décisif : celui du producteur-batteur John Reynolds, tandis que des musiciens de haut rang, dont la bassiste Clare Kenny et la claviériste Carol Isaacs, apportent leur science du jeu à des compositions finement ciselées.
Il est question de romance, de parentalité (le doux banjo de « Feel This Way Again » ou le lumineux « Favorite Flavor » avec les chœurs de Lucy Wainwright Roche), de souvenirs de famille, de la culture américaine des armes à feu (sur « Muster » et à un degré moindre sur « Change My Heart ») ou de l’identité gay (le poignant « Country Radio »), toujours en souplesse, avec un sens de l’à-propos indiscutable. La chanson-titre, toutefois, demeure le plus parfait étendard du sublime écrin folk-rock dessiné par les Indigo Girls, un duo décidément à part, évoquant aussi bien R.E.M., les B-52’s que les Dixie Chicks.
