Talib Kweli and Madlib truly offer the best of both worlds--or at least coasts--on LIBERATION. New York’s Kweli and Cali’s Madlib released this mixtape-style collaborative LP as a free download in 2007. And while the stream-of-consciousness soul-sampling and gritty, lo-fi vocals fit the mold of an unofficial release, the focused lyrical prowess of both rappers on standout tracks “Funny Money” (“The crowd was so thin he blamed Obama and the Twin Tower bombers”-Madlib) and “Time Is Right” (“You’re rhymes are cheaper than gas in Jersey”-Kweli) elevates LIBERATION beyond the average amateur compilation made for quick-cred street consumption.
