Dès ce premier album qu’ils publient en 1995, Leftfield se sont imposés comme une entité bien à part de l’électro britannique. Formé en 1989 par Neil Barnes et Paul Daley, le duo d’ex-punks tombés dans la marmite des machines fait partie de ces groupes précurseurs de la scène des 90’s aux côtés d’Orbital, d’Underworld, de Prodigy et des Chemical Brothers. Une scène tendant de solides ponts entre sonorités techno et attitude rock. Leftism n’a pas été véritablement conçu comme un album puisqu’il rassemble la production des singles de Leftfield publiés entre 1992 et 1995. Ce qui n’empêche pourtant guère le disque d’être consommable comme une entité, comme un trip unique slalomant entre techno pure, dub, trance, jungle, ambiant et house pour, à l’arrivée, accoucher d’un kaléidoscope roiginal, tantôt planant, tantôt hystérique. Le duo offre le micro à diverses voix (Earl Sixteen, Cheshire Cat, Papa Dee, Djum Djum, Toni Halliday, Danny Red, Lemn Sissay et même l’ex-Sex Pistols et PIL John Lydon) histoire de rendre leur affaire encore plus humaine… Le succès de Leftism tant public que critique ne stimula que modérément Leftfield qui ne sortira par la suite qu’un album, Rhythm And Stealth en 1999, avant de relancer la machine en 2015 avec Alternative Light Source. © MD/Qobuz
