Onzième album solo de David Hallyday, Le Temps d'Une Vie intervient quelques années après la parenthèse en groupe de Mission Control, à dominante electro-rock, qui l'avait vu avancer masqué le temps d'un album et d'une tournée. Hormis cette aventure, cela faisait six ans que le célèbre héritier du rock n'avait pas proposé d'album solo à son public, depuis Un Nouveau Monde (2010).
Revoilà donc le chanteur dans ce qu'il sait faire le mieux : trousser des chansons électriques et sentimentales qui le rapprochent tantôt vers le rock, tantôt vers la variété, surtout des ballades dans ce corpus de dix compositions. Ouvert par le morceau-phare et premier extrait « Comme avant », celui-ci possède la particularité de ne comporter que des titres interprétés en français. Cette option passe d'autant mieux qu'elle va de pair avec un allègement des arrangements, tout en restant un album de rock en bon et due forme.
Comme à son habitude, le méticuleux musicien qu'il est a passé des mois à peaufiner chaque sonorité en studio, occupant tout le spectre de la composition à la production en passant par l'instrumentation. Si le recueil commence fort avec les titres « Sur mes épaules » et « Des portes entre nous », il sait maintenir l'attention et ce sans la présence d'invité, grâce à des moments soignés dans « Infiniment seuls » ou le morceau qui lui donne son nom. Le rocker français le plus discret ne déroge pas au style qui lui a apporté le succès mais gagne en maturité et simplicité.
