John Cage's Sonatas & Interludes for prepared piano (1948) are among his most popular works, drawing in even listeners skeptical about his later conceptual experiments with their invention and varied timbral and tonal colors. Prepared pianos differ greatly according to the materials used to prepare them, and pianist Agnese Toniutti comes well prepared ("I travel with a special little briefcase where bolts, nuts, screws, plastic, rubber of different sizes and materials have been stored during previous years," she writes). The rhythmic aspects of the work may also be realized in different ways. Toniutti does not put it this way, but her reading accords well with an emphasis on the Indian aspects of the work, which Cage himself pointed out. Toniutti's tempi are fixed; she writes that her intent was to "secure the durational element of the work as precisely as possible, so that its sonic form could manifest itself vividly." Some of the pieces sound like Indonesian gamelan music (which has an essentially Indian rhythmic basis); sample the First Interlude. The sound, recorded in Toniutti's native Italy (no further information is given as to the location), is clear, and those wanting an engaging introduction to this work or to early Cage, in general, can confidently select this recording.
