Its title sounds glitzy and glamorous, which may suit the larger stage Parker McCollum finds himself upon in 2020, but Hollywood Gold isn't a major label sell out move. There's no denying that the EP is sleeker than his indie projects but Hollywood Gold winds up being a glossy full realization of his Red Dirt country, one that stays true to his sturdy songwriting while pushing the melodic elements that could bring him a wider audience. Some of this accessibility is due to some of his collaborators. Randy Montana co-wrote "Young Man's Blues" and "Pretty Heart" with McCollum, while the singer had the good sense to cut "Like a Cowboy," a weathered, soulful ballad penned by Chris Stapleton and Al Anderson. The co-writers help open up McCollum's sound, as does Jon Randall's production, resulting in a smooth, clean spin on Texas country, one that's rooted in traditional values but executed with enough verve to feel fresh.
