For the purists and history buffs out there who may recoil at the mention of Haydn sonatas for violin and fortepiano, as there are no such entries in the famed Hoboken catalog, relax. The five works of "Papa" Haydn heard here are indeed original, unarranged works for violin and fortepiano. As the album's liner notes explain, the titles are really a matter of subjective nomenclature. While they are not, in fact, "sonatas" in the truest classical definition of the term, they are nonetheless valuable and highly enjoyable works. Performing on period instruments from 1734 and 1815, respectively, violinist Alberto Bologni and fortepianist Giusepppe Modugno achieve a generally warm, intimate sound that makes short chamber works such as these so inviting. There is a slight bit of undesirable echo mixed into the sound, but this does not greatly affect the listening experience. Bologni and Modugno, who have played together for more than a decade and a half at the time of this recording, have the type of close-knit dialogue that can be achieved from such a long-standing collaboration. The slow movements of each sonata are executed with pleasing sense of nobility and sensitivity while the fast movements are filled with pure joviality and youthful exuberance. Despite their official title, these five works are sure to make an enjoyable addition to any collection.
