Hang Cool Teddy Bear a beau ne pas être une séquelle explicite à Bat Out of Hell, le disque fait preuve de bien assez de grandiloquence et de panache pour laisser imaginer qu'il s'agit d'une quatrième sortie dans la série des Bat. Il n'en est rien et contrairement aux trois disques qui ont contribué à façonner la carrière de Meat Loaf, Hang Cool propose un fil conducteur, quoiqu'un peu vague, autour de l'histoire d'un soldat blessé, plutôt qu'un simple concept, une différence sensée donner à l'album son identité avec le soutien de la production claire de Rob Cavallo. Ce dernier corrige les erreurs commises sur Bat Out of Hell III (des sonorités galvaudées héritées du Sunset Strip des années 80) mais ne parvient pas à totalement sauver un album qui manque à nouveau de chansons écrites par Steinman.
