Créé le jour de Pâques 1708 à Rome, dans le somptueux palais Ruspoli chez l’extravagant marquis du même nom où le jeune Haendel habita deux ans, La Resurezzione est un des premiers oratorios du compositeur saxon. Il met en scène Lucifer, Marie-Madeleine, un ange, Saint-Jean et Marie, la femme de Cléophas. Le lendemain de la création dirigée par Corelli, le Pape Clément XI envoie une sévère réprimande au marquis pour avoir fait chanter… une femme en public dans une œuvre religieuse.
L’œuvre présente toute une série d’innovations avec un livret qui superpose deux actions, des duos dramatiques, des combinaisons instrumentales offrant de nombreuses couleurs grâce à un orchestre de quarante-et-un musiciens et de nombreux solistes, effectif considérable pour l’époque.
Réalisé en 1981 au Kingsway Hall de Londres, l’enregistrement de Christopher Hogwood a été largement distancé depuis. C’est le problème des interprétations historiquement informées qui vieillissent souvent très vite suite à l’évolution du style et des modes de jeu sur instruments d’époque ou reconstitués comme tels. Celui-ci garde cependant un intérêt certain dans une perspective historique et grâce aux voix de la jeune Emma Kirkby, de la soprano Patrizia Kwella, de la contralto Carolyn Watkinson, du ténor Ian Partridge et du Lucifer un peu guignolesque de la basse David Thomas qui en fait des tonnes dans sa représentation de l’enfer destinée à faire frissonner le public. © François Hudry/Qobuz
