Sa mère endormait Percy Grainger avec la chanson "Campton Races" de Stephen Foster, qui lui a inspiré son "Tribute to Foster". Grainger a largement puisé son inspiration dans la littérature, de Kipling et son "Barrack-Room Ballads" (Danny Deever) à Walt Whitman ("Marching Song of Democracy") en passant par Swinburne ("The Bride's Tragedy"), Walter Scott ("The Lads of Wamphray") ou encore les sagas des Islandais ("The Wraith of Odin").
