Depuis quelques années, Paul McCartney est atteint de frénésie. Il n'en finit plus de parcourir la planète afin de proposer à ceux qui n'auraient encore jamais vu un Beatles, et surtout à la grande majorité de ses admirateurs, un condensé de cinquante années à pondre des succès.
Dans la foulée d'un Back in the US de 2002 (transformé en Back in the World) et du DVD moscovite In Red Square en 2005, passant sur quelques productions studio majeures (Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, 2005 et Memory Almost Full, 2007) et autres danseuses classique (Ecce Cor Meum, 2006) ou électronique (The Fireman : Electric Arguments, 2008), le prolifique bassiste ressert donc ses standards, assortis de quelques nouveautés.
Côté patrimoine, Macca revisite sans grande surprise, mais secondé par un groupe efficace, ses standards du temps jadis (« Drive My Car », « Eleonor Rigby », « Paperback Writer »), d'avant-hier (« Jet », « Band on the Run », le rare « Mrs. Vanderbilt », « Live and Let Die »), d'hier (« Calico Skies », « Flaming Pie ») et d'aujourd'hui : « Dance Tonight », « Only Mama Knows » ainsi que « Highway » et « Sing the Changes » du Fireman. Ces derniers sont parmi les meilleurs moments d'un répertoire essentiellement axé sur la nostalgie Beatles/Wings. A noter la contribution de Billy Joel, précédent locataire de l'endroit, sur « I Saw Her Standing There ».
Good Evening New York City, saisi en juillet 2009, quatre ans après le concert mythique des Beatles dans cet ancien Shea Stadium, distille son indéfectible joie de jouer, ce qui constitue le point fort de ce double album assorti d'un très beau DVD. Inaltérable.
