Led by the seething, tightly wound guitar and desperate, plumbed-from-the-depths vocals of Rowland S. Howard (formerly a mainstay of the Birthday Party and Crime & the City Solution,) These Immortal Souls wander through the haze of smoky cabarets and faded photos worn at the edges on their full-length debut, Get Lost (Don't Lie). Throughout this bleak and paranoid midnight journey, the band plays dark marches ("Marry Me (Lie! Lie!)" and "Hide"); cover an Alex Chilton song with just the right amount of swagger ("Hey! Little Child"); and atmospheric Doors-meets-Bowie somber rock & roll ("These Immortal Souls"). This monumental album by dark poets of the soul -- Rowland S. Howard, pianist Genevieve McGuckin, bassist Harry Howard, and drummer Epic Soundtracks -- draws from sources such as Leonard Cohen, early '70s-era Rolling Stones, and even Joy Division, while completely avoiding the over-the-top trappings of the goth genre. Simultaneously rocking, painfully beautiful, and scarily close to the center of despair, this album gave notice that Howard and his crew were taking no prisoners along the way to staking out the claim that they were the true inheritors of the sound the Birthday Party had launched a few years before. Check out the rambling, rumbling ""Blood and Sand” She Said," a song with all that band's twisted glamour, spike-in-the-ear guitars, and tooth-rattling punch, but with substantially more subtlety and insinuation. Fewer people may have been listening to this as opposed to the Bad Seeds or Crime & the City Solution, but not for reasons of quality, only circumstance.
