Le caractère légèrement ampoulé de l’intitulé de cette compilation a au moins le mérite de préciser les contours de la moindre critique : on ne lutte pas contre le hit-parade. Et on ne lutte pas davantage face à ces morceaux bénis, qu’on entend le matin au réveil dans la radio, donc qu’on chantonne sous la douche, donc que l’on s’empresse de se procurer chez son détaillant le plus proche.
« Give Me The Night », « This Masquerade », « Breezin’ », « On Broadway » sont exactement de quoi ils ont l’air : des airs faciles, jouer facilement (tout du moins, en apparence) pour nous faciliter la vie. Naturellement, George Benson a fait beaucoup de sous avec, mais c’était en nous apportant encore davantage de plaisir.
Á l’instar d’un cuisinier qui prépare à la perfection un seul plat, le guitariste et chanteur applique avec talent et rigueur une recette immuable, celle d’une musique polie (peu d’aspérités ici), et polie (aucune extravagance ici). Vingt morceaux de quiétude, de swing, et de plaisirs simples. Encore fallait-il y penser.
