L’album le plus risqué du groupe et dont ils sont probablement le plus fiers. Le premier single « Don’t Feel Right » lorgnant vers les Ohio Players n’est aucunement représentatif de l’ensemble. L’ombre musical de J-Dilla, récemment décédé, recouvre l’ensemble résolument très sombre.
Rarement un disque de rap aura flirté avec des thèmes aussi graves, évoquant la paranoïa, la frustration, la colère, des sentiments que The Roots souhaitaient mettre en avant car Love considérait que plus aucun artiste n’avait le courage de dévier de la mouvance festive à outrance et totalement déraisonnée.
Ils démarrent l’œuvre sur une reprise du morceau « Fantastic » issu du « Fantastic Vol. I » du groupe de Dilla, Slum Village, et terminent sur un titre hommage de 8 minutes au rappeur producteur, lui empruntant « Time: The Donut of the Heart » tiré de son incroyable « Donuts », recueil de compositions douloureuses tapées à la machine AKAi dans une chambre d’hôpital.
L’album continue lentement avec « False Media » et la voix pleine de récitations d’un Wadud Ahmad reprenant la thématique de la pochette, illustrant les massacres humains sous couvert d’idéologies douteuses. Puis s’emballe avec « Game Theory », employant encore un échantillon de Sly & The Family Stone, dans un déchaînement de rythmiques effrénées.
Les deux rappeurs du groupe se complémentent à merveille sur « In the Music » qui résonne comme une espèce de claustrophobie musicale. « Long Time » appelle à la libération des esprits, tandis que « Atonement » fait réfléchir quant à la survie de l’espèce, tout en utilisant une composition des 5 joyeux drilles au sommet de la montagne musicale et plus connus sous le nom de Radiohead
Ce qui est d’autant plus incroyable c’est que cet album est sorti sur Def Jam Records sous la totale bénédiction de Jay-Z. Un pavé très noir dans la discographie du groupe mais absolument indispensable.
