Drôle de personnage que Dan Reeder. Né en Louisiane en 1954, il a grandi en Californie puis s’est installé en Allemagne au début des années 1980. Artiste dans l’âme, il dessine, peint et fabrique lui-même ses instruments avec lesquels il compose des comptines folks sans grande prétention mais qui possèdent bien des charmes et surtout cette authenticité qui manque cruellement à bien des artistes aujourd’hui. Signés sur Oh Boy Records, label de John Prine, les deux musiciens deviennent amis et font plusieurs tournées ensemble jusqu’à la disparition de Prine en avril 2020. Ce nouvel album de Reeder, comme les précédents, a une pochette composée de dessins de l’auteur, et réuni 20 titres comme autant de Post-it collés sur un vieux frigidaire détraqué. Le calme est au rendez-vous, une douce mélancolie traversée par des sourires et clins d’œil, comme sur Young at Heart, lorsque Reeder nous souffle avec son ton débonnaire « Sex is complicated, and so is democracy… ». Dans ces temps anxiogènes et souvent saturés de tensions, cette ballade folk en compagnie de Dan Reeder apparait finalement salutaire.© Yan Ceh/Qobuz
