Il aura fallu que les clubs ferment dans le monde entier pour que Carl Cox retourne à la composition. Le DJ anglais, probablement la plus grosse star des platines des trente dernières années, s’est fait enfermer par le Covid comme tout le monde. Dans sa maison de Melbourne en Australie, il a déterré tout son matériel audio et l’a rebranché. Et le voici revenu à ses débuts, à faire des beats sans but. “J’ai fait de la musique comme le faisaient les gars de la jungle des débuts, les trucs à la Metalheadz, c’était purement basé sur le punk. Et on a besoin de plus de ça en ce moment, alors que tout le monde semble faire des disques pour entrer dans le top 10 de Beatport”, dit-il.
C’est donc une quinzaine de titres ultra-bruts, à peine retouchés, que présente Carl Cox sur ce Electronics Générations, comme une forme de retour aux sources pour l’ancien résident du méga-club Space à Ibiza, qui a connu tous les artifices du milieu de la techno et du clubbing. Pas d’intros calibrées, des sons à peine traités, c’est un album inattendu de la part de Carl Cox qui avait peut-être aussi cette volonté de montrer qu’il était capable de faire de la techno pas mainstream mais qui claque fort. Et franchement, il s’en sort pas trop mal avec des kicks presque rudimentaires, quasi bestiaux comme sur Line Lock avec ces hi-hats en freestyle et cette basse qui matraque. Il a aussi retrouvé la machine à acid, la TB-303, qu’on entend sur un World Gone Mad qui porte bien son nom ou maniée par Fatboy Slim en featuring sur Speed Trials on Acid. Et puis il s’allie avec le pionnier de la techno de Detroit Juan Atkins sur l’incroyable Deep Space X (avec ce synthé cosmique et ce kick tellement lourd !), qu’on devrait entendre en boucle sur tous les bons dancefloors ces prochaines années.
