There seems to have been some intention of releasing this particular album as a full-fledged commercial release, going by the amount of work that went into it. Instead, this is a limited promotional release, which generally means high prices, few copies, and many disappointed fans. As is freely admitted everywhere in the artwork and notes, the music is not, by any means, solely the work of John Debney -- aside from the title music by Ron Grainer, the score is contributed to by John Sponsler and Louis Febre, who took themes created by Debney and expanded upon them. This kind of gang writing is hardly unknown in the world of television soundtrack composition -- the Mike Post music operation consists of Post handling the themes and a group of junior composers handling basic cues. The soundtrack is actually fairly decent, standing up very well away from the TV-movie, with a mix of suspenseful and romantic writing; at times the music resembles the sort of scoring more readily associated with historical fantasies, which gives it an interesting aura. It isn't always perfect -- there are moments when the synthesizers rush out and take over everything, as happens in the clichéd "The Chase," which has more than a little resemblance to some of the poor latter-day series scoring. Overall, though, it's an engaging recording.
