The music of Dobrinka Tabakova is an increasingly familiar presence on British concert programs (not so much stateside, although this release could change that). This 2023 release, which made classical best-seller charts in the fall of that year, offers an ideal introduction to her music. Except for the opening Orpheus' Comet, commissioned by the European Broadcasting Union and incorporating the group's Monteverdi theme, all of the pieces are multi-movement works. There are two concertos, both notable for their variety of moods; Tabakova's music is tonal and fully accessible, but it still gives one the feeling of hearing something totally new with its energetic blocks of sound. The Concerto for viola and strings was commissioned by Maxim Rysanov and is a true challenge for the soloist without ever being splashy. Violists, with their sparse solo repertory, should rejoice in this work. The longest work is an Earth Suite that was assembled from three earlier compositions; it is not completely coherent but sample the first movement, "Tectonic"; it is an entrancing portrait of a deep terrestrial force. Tabakova and conductor Delayana Lazarova, leading the Hallé Orchestra, are both natives of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and one couldn't ask for a better illustration of how Eastern Europeans have enriched Western concert life. A thoroughly enjoyable release.
