Christopher Hogwood faisait œuvre de pionnier lorsque, en 1983, il enregistra pour la première fois des Suites pour clavecin de Louis Couperin. Le style et la facture instrumentale ont évidemment évolué depuis ces temps déjà lointains. Mais il reste dans cet album la saveur de la découverte.
Au clavecin, Christopher Hogwood privilégie le lyrisme de ces pièces en mettant l'accent sur la profonde mélancolie qui en émane. Avec une grande fluidité et beaucoup de poésie, il nous donne la preuve de sa parfaite connaissance de la musique française de cette époque.
Christopher Hogwood avait travaillé le clavecin à Paris avec le colombien Rafael Puyana, puis à Prague avec la grande claveciniste Zuzana Růžičková avant de devenir un disciple de Gustav Leonhardt à Amsterdam en 1968. © François Hudry/Qobuz
