Claudia Church's self-titled debut is an example of run-of-the-mill Nashville musical product of the late '90s. That the album is so bland is something of a shock, given that producer (and Church's husband) Rodney Crowell distinguished himself with over 20 years of work on a series of first-rate albums. Here, though, Crowell's production never rises above the ordinary, in spite of the presence of some of Nashville's best session players. In some spots, Crowell embraces some of the worst aspects of the country-pop sound that he was previously immune from. The songs on the album never rise above the commonplace. "The Man I Love," penned by Crowell, contains his trademark musical elements but lacks the lyrical punch of his finest compositions. "Lost in a Feeling" is pure country-pop: middle-of-the-road pop with syrupy strings, with some "small-town-girl" references, a bit of vocal twang, and occasional steel guitar to make it seem "country." And no new country album would be complete without a cover of a '60s or '70s pop classic; here, it's the Gerry Goffin/Carole King song "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," made country by simply adding some steel guitar flourishes. Most importantly, Church never distinguishes herself as a vocalist, lacking the interpretive power of country-pop stars such as Reba McEntire and Pam Tillis, or the character of a neo-traditionalist like Carlene Carter.
