Tremaine Aldon Neverson alias Trey Songz s'est-il trompé de décennie ? Chapter V, un titre limpide pour le cinquième album du petit prince du R&B qui fait revivre (une fois n'est pas coutume) le son old school des années 1990 en s'inspirant de la fine fleur du genre : de Usher à R. Kelly en passant par Craig David. Un album qui aura peut-être l'avantage de faire découvrir à la génération Y biberonnée aux beats de Rihanna et de Kanye West, ce que signifiait R&B contemporain il y a vingt ans.
Difficile donc de juger un tel album à l'heure où le R&B se retrouve littéralement englouti par la tendance EDM et autres productions auto-tunées. Songz a au moins le mérite de rester fidèle à sa musique et ce depuis le début de sa carrière. Est-ce pour autant suffisant ? Rien n'est moins sûr. Entre le R&B sous glucose bourré de bons sentiments pour crooner-lover averti (« Pretty Girls Lie », « Bad Decisions », « Without A Woman »...) et la version bad boy du dimanche sur « 2 Reasons » featuring T.I. où l'Américain surfe vainement sur la vague smooth R&B à la Frank Ocean, rappelant au passage que les femmes sont des « bitches », il y a comme un paradoxe dans le message que tente d'insuffler Songz. De même qu'il y a contradiction quand il s'essaie au rap sur « Playing Hard ». On lui préfère encore son chant sirupeux.
Un cinquième chapitre en 20 parties tout de même, pour lequel ont également contribué Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Meek Mill et Diddy.
