Le fameux producteur Rick Rubin reprend les commandes du bateau Chili Peppers et les Red Hot enfilent le pied à l’étrier. Les compositions sont plus poussées, les productions peaufinées et les textures sonores approfondies. Sans jamais renier leur mélange de pop, funk, hip hop et rock, les Red Hot Chili Peppers sont plus alternatifs que jamais. La guitare occupe une place importante et délivre des riffs qui restent en tête pendant des heures, tandis que Flea et sa basse soutiennent les rythmiques avec un slapping à la cadence infernale.
