Le Nash Ensemble organisait en 2010 un week-end spécial autour de la thématique du camp de Theresienstadt. Concerts, films, tables rondes et expositions ont permis d'examiner la vie culturelle extraordinaire dans ce camp mis en place par les nazis en 1941, où l'intelligentsia de juifs tchèques fut détenue avant d'être emmenée dans les camps de concentration. Cet album de musique de chambre est le reflet de cet évènement, en hommage à quatre compositeurs qui furent tués à Auschwitz. Au programme la suite de l'opéra Brundibar de Hans Krasa qui donne son titre à l'album, mais aussi des pièces de Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein et Pavel Haas.
