Contrairement à ce qui se dit, l’on n’est pas toujours aussi bien servi par soi-même. Certains compositeurs furent de piètres chefs dans l’absolu, et de catastrophiques interprètes de leurs propres œuvres. Mais la remarque ne s’applique pas à Benjamin Britten qui fut, à la baguette, un merveilleux défenseur de tous les répertoires qu’il dirigea, de Schumann à Mozart à Chostakovitch à lui-même. Il semble donc normal que dans la Discothèque Idéale de Qobuz figure l’un des plus magiques opéras qui soient, le Songe d’une nuit d’été, dans l’exécution (car « interprète »-t-on sa propre musique ?) qu’en fit Britten en 1966 à la tête du London Symphony Orchestra avec en tête de distribution Alfred Deller, l’un des créateurs de l’ouvrage lors de la première à Aldeburgh en 1960. Bien plus qu’une bête version de référence, c’est là un document indispensable pour quiconque souhaite s’approcher de cette ineffable musique selon la vision même du compositeur – qui ajusta l’ouvrage aux forces orchestrales en présence, car si la partition initiale fait appel à 27 musiciens dont seulement douze cordes, Britten l’enregistre ici avec un grand orchestre. Cela ne change rien aux équilibres entre musique et voix, en vérité. On notera que par rapport à la distribution de la création, Peter Pears – à qui, pour une fois, Britten ne donne pas de premier rôle dans – a été promu du rôle de l’un des bouffons à celui, plus lyrique, de Lysander. Quoi qu’il en soit, voilà un enregistrement sans égal dans la discographie pourtant très ample de cet absolu chef-d’œuvre lyrique du XXe siècle, mettant en musique l’absolu chef-d’œuvre des années 1595 – pour mémoire, Britten a repris mot pour mot la pièce, tout en supprimant quelques personnages et en resserrant le discours. Chronique

Contrairement à ce qui se dit, l’on n’est pas toujours aussi bien servi par soi-même. Certains compositeurs furent de piètres chefs dans l’absolu, et de catastrophiques interprètes de leurs propres œuvres. Mais la remarque ne s’applique pas à Benjamin Britten qui fut, à la baguette, un merveilleux défenseur de tous les répertoires qu’il dirigea, de Schumann à Mozart à Chostakovitch à lui-même. Il semble donc normal que dans la Discothèque Idéale de Qobuz figure l’un des plus magiques opéras qui soient, le Songe d’une nuit d’été, dans l’exécution (car « interprète »-t-on sa propre musique ?) qu’en fit Britten en 1966 à la tête du London Symphony Orchestra avec en tête de distribution Alfred Deller, l’un des créateurs de l’ouvrage lors de la première à Aldeburgh en 1960. Bien plus qu’une bête version de référence, c’est là un document indispensable pour quiconque souhaite s’approcher de cette ineffable musique selon la vision même du compositeur – qui ajusta l’ouvrage aux forces orchestrales en présence, car si la partition initiale fait appel à 27 musiciens dont seulement douze cordes, Britten l’enregistre ici avec un grand orchestre. Cela ne change rien aux équilibres entre musique et voix, en vérité. On notera que par rapport à la distribution de la création, Peter Pears – à qui, pour une fois, Britten ne donne pas de premier rôle dans – a été promu du rôle de l’un des bouffons à celui, plus lyrique, de Lysander. Quoi qu’il en soit, voilà un enregistrement sans égal dans la discographie pourtant très ample de cet absolu chef-d’œuvre lyrique du XXe siècle, mettant en musique l’absolu chef-d’œuvre des années 1595 – pour mémoire, Britten a repris mot pour mot la pièce, tout en supprimant quelques personnages et en resserrant le discours.
