As the title suggests, Beyond Schumann consists of works by Robert Schumann to which German pianist Michael Gees has freely added material. The booklet and publicity for this release present this added material variously as "improvisation," "embellishment," or simply, in Gees' own words, as "a starting point for creative piano playing." The notes are on shaky historical ground in claiming that any of this might have represented actual performance practice in Schubert, much less Schumann, who is the very prototype of the Romantic artist. Thus the audience for this album may well be restricted to those generally accepting of speculative projects. This said, Gees' approach has much to recommend it. Of the categories above, most of his contributions to these pieces fall into the second category, embellishment. That is to say, he generally respects the structural integrity of Schumann's pieces, mostly short works from the Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13, Kinderszenen, Op. 15, and Kreisleriana, Op. 16. Of course Gees is not the first musician to improvise upon classical pieces, but this is precisely where most earlier attempts, the Bach performances by the Modern Jazz Quartet a signal exception, become something other than classical music: if the structure becomes more like jazz, then jazz is what the music will be. Gees is not vulnerable to that charge. His added material -- the familiar Träumerei from Kinderzenen (CD 1, track 20) can serve as a good example -- is more in the nature of delving into the existing music and its alternative implications, with spaces filled in, phrases extended, and harmony inflected rather than fundamental alteration of the structure of the music. With the longer Vogel als Prophet (Bird as Prophet), from Waldszenen, Gees broadens out a bit at the end, but by this time he has established some patterns of his own. The music may not clearly sustain the double CD-length program, however. Listener reactions to this release will necessarily be personal, but it's worth noting that Gees has accomplished something unlike that offered by earlier similar attempts.
