Third Coast Percussion is a quartet that offers contemporary works, novel in concept yet easily graspable for any open-minded audience. This 2023 release, in fact, might even make an ideal introduction to contemporary avant-garde music. Between Breaths is a general title, but it accurately describes Missy Mazzoli's arresting Millennium Canticles, the five-movement work that opens the program; its first movement is full of breathy, stage-whispered text that mixes numbers and nonsense syllables. The work has a program entailing post-apocalyptic rituals, but the variety of sounds Mazzoli imagines is compelling even aside from this. The other works include one, In Practice, collectively composed by the members of Third Coast Percussion themselves. Perhaps the most compelling is Ayanna Woods' Triple Point, which takes its name and concept from the point at which a substance may be liquid, solid, or gaseous, an idea admirably suited to percussion music. Tyondai Braxton's Sunny X is the only work here that has an electronic element, and Gemma Peacocke's Death Wish is the only one with a strong pitch component. All are played with the group's characteristic crispness and intensity; the album draws the listener in from the beginning. The Cedille label contributes excellent studio sound to a recording that should expand its reach somewhat.
