Harpist Parker Ramsay has expanded the repertory of his instrument in various ways and has stated an interest in "how musicians move beyond mere questions of instrumentation and into deeper investigations of color and harmony." He has also quoted critic Donald Francis Tovey to the effect that "Bach wrote on the principle, not that music was written for instruments, but that instruments are made for music." These are elegant justifications for recording Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, on a harp. Against them might be set the contention that although, yes, Bach felt free to transcribe his works for new forces, performers have a responsibility to respect the sound world that Bach knew. Not only did he not write for the harp, he would never have even thought about writing for the harp. Sound has structural implications that are distorted by removing a work from its general context, and even a medium like the string quartet that is relatively close in time to Bach may be troublesome when applied to his music. Listeners must decide these questions for themselves, but what can be noted here is that Ramsay has thought his concept through. Recording in King's College Chapel at Cambridge University, where he was previously the first American organ scholar, he uses the harp in ways that clarify the textures of Bach's variations and canons. A reverberant university chapel might normally not be right for music that was written for a dedicatee's chamber, but here, Ramsay lets chromatic runs blend into a sort of cosmic harmony, while melodic passages jump out in sharper relief. It's more a reconceptualization of the music than an interpretation, but on its own terms, it works.
