Plus qu'un groupe au sens rock du terme, Celtic Woman est une troupe constituée pour personnaliser le concept Celtic Woman. Seules la chanteuse Chloë Agnew et la violoniste Máiréad Nesbitt assurent la continuité artistique du projet depuis ses débuts.
Support des spectacles, les albums ont une fâcheuse tendance à se ressembler autour d'une trame de ballades celtiques et de titres celtisés pour l'occasion. Les envolées lyriques des quatre chanteuses apportent elle un climat qui va d'une rêverie new age pour le meilleur, aux vocalises exagérées de la variété internationale pour le pire.
An Irish Journey ne déroge pas à la règle et si les titres vraiment celtiques passent bien, « Danny Boy » ou « Mo Ghile Mear » bénéficient de la qualité des voix, il est permis de se demander ce que vient faire là « Amazing Grace ». Le single « The Water Is Wide » toutes cornemuses et violons dehors est un croisement plausible entre Enya et The Corrs et ne devrait pas effaroucher les amateurs de variété celtique.
Le CD est comme le DVD un produit dérivé qui permet de retrouver dans son espace personnel les envolées vocales de quatre belles voix sur fond de tradition celtique modernisée. Il ne faut pas demander à An Irish Journey d'offrir ce qu'il n'a pas et le considérer comme un bon album de vulgarisation du répertoire irlandais. Ce qui n'et déjà pas si mal.
